We've been using this mattress topper since last July and like it very much.
We had our doubts, at first, because neither of us can tolerate warm mattresses, and some of the reviews we had read about memory foam in the past few years addressed the fact that memory foam generated too much heat.
But this summer we replaced our spring mattress (which had developed a noticeable ridge in the middle and very uncomfortable wells after only four years of use) with one made from natural latex, which turned out to be a lot firmer than we had expected -to the point of being uncomfortable. We were contemplating returning the, otherwise excellent, mattress when we spotted this mattress topper on sale for a limited time at a warehouse and so we thought we'd give it a try.
Well, even though the weather was still hot and humid, we didn't find the topper uncomfortably warm. It generated a bit more warmth than the latex mattress, but only slightly so we decided to keep it because it really provided the perfect solution for us turning our otherwise uncomfortably firm new mattress into a very comfy, yet supportive, bed.
In cold weather, if you keep your bedroom cool, you'll notice that the gel memory foam feels firmer and that it takes it a few more seconds to conform to your body - we like this and wish it did that in hot weather as well.
The topper has a particular odor, which dissipates gradually. We slept on it the very first night and though the odor was not very strong, we could still smell it - we are very sensitive to chemical smells so this one wasn't too bad, otherwise we would have not been able to keep it. I can't remember how long it took for it to completely lose that odor, but I'd say about a week. A good mattress cover certainly helps with this.
The topper case is made from cotton which, in our experience, does not slip or shift (perhaps it helps that our mattress shell is made from a non-slippery material and that we put our mattress cover *on top* of the mattress topper).
We have been rotating this topper every two or three weeks, a quarter turn at a time -this makes our bed look a bit funny every few weeks, but it really doesn't show once the bed is made. Rotating the topper is recommended, as it extends its life and keeps it from compacting and developing wells.
We are extremely happy with this product and highly recommend it.
TIP: This mattress topper is very heavy; it comes rolled up and vacuum packed and the package provides very good protection. You have to be very careful, though, when using scissors (better than a box cutter for this) and will need someone to help you slip the gel topper inside the provided case. Once unrolled, and to avoid damaging the foam, be careful not to pinch and stretch the edges of the topper when you are lifting it to place it on the bed - just fold it in half and try to support it with your arms, rather than grabbing and pinching the edges with your fingers. Placing the case, unzipped, on the bed first, and then the topper, worked well for us.
A NOTE OF CAUTION: Foam mattress toppers only offer **temporary** help (and for a rather short period of time) in situations where an older mattress has developed deep indentations where your body lays every night. If your mattress has developed a very noticeable ridge in the middle, consider replacing it with a firmer one and then purchase this topper, which will provide a very comfortable night sleep and extend the life of your new mattress.
